Animal fats pancreas cancer link

BBC News

Eating a diet high in red meat and dairy products is linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, a US study has suggested.

Researchers followed 500,000 people who had completed a food diary for an average of six years. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute paper found those who had the most animal fats in their diet had a higher risk of developing the cancer.

UK experts said cutting down on the fats was a way of reducing risk. There has previously been confusion over whether there was a link between animal fats and pancreatic cancer, with different studies reaching opposite conclusions.

About 7,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK each year, with smoking being the biggest risk factor. The prognosis is poor - the time between diagnosis and death is usually about six months.

'Welcome addition'

This latest research was carried out by the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, which felt earlier studies had been too small to give reliable results. The participants were being followed to see if they developed a range of diseases.

Of the half a million studied, 1,337 developed pancreatic cancer.Men who consumed the highest amount of total fats had a 53% higher relative rate of pancreatic cancer compared with men who ate the least.

In women, there was a 23% higher rate of the disease in those eating the most fat compared with those who ate the least.Overall, people who consumed high amounts of saturated fats had 36% higher relative rates of pancreatic cancer compared with those who consumed low amounts.

Writing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the researchers led by Dr Rachel Stolzenberg-Solomon, said: "We observed positive associations between pancreatic cancer and intakes of total, saturated, and monounsaturated fat overall, particularly from red meat and dairy food sources.

"We did not observe any consistent association with polyunsaturated or fat from plant food sources."Altogether, these results suggest a role for animal fat in pancreatic carcinogenesis."

In an editorial in the journal, Dr Brian Wolpin, of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and Dr Meir Stampfer, of the Harvard School of Public Health, said the study was a "welcome addition to the understanding of a disease that is in great need of new insights".

Josephine Querido, senior science information officer for Cancer Research UK, said: "This large study adds to the evidence that pancreatic cancer is more common in people who eat too much fat, particularly saturated fat.

"Understanding ways of reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer is very important because it can be very difficult to treat."Apart from stopping smoking, the best way to reduce your risk of cancer is to eat plenty of fruit vegetables and fibre, and to cut down on fatty foods, red and processed meat and limit your intake of alcohol."

UBS to sell $3.5bn of new shares

BBC News

Switzerland's biggest bank, UBS, is to raise 3.8bn Swiss francs ($3.5bn; £2.1bn) of capital by selling shares. The bank also said it would make a loss in the second quarter of the year, after making a 2bn Swiss franc loss in the first three months of the year.

The share issue will "help reinforce confidence in UBS and the place of Swiss finance", UBS said. The bank was hit hard by writedowns on its toxic assets and client withdrawals from its wealth management units.

It plans to sell about 293 million new shares at 13 Swiss francs each. UBS lost 20.9bn francs in 2008, the largest loss made by a Swiss company.

The Swiss government had to bail out UBS last year with 6bn Swiss francs and the Swiss central bank has agreed to absorb some of its bad debt. The company has cut almost 20,000 jobs since 2007.

The bank's loss contrasts with the reviving fortunes of competitor Credit Suisse, which reported a net profit of 2bn Swiss francs for the January-March quarter.

'Surprise' prostate result probed

BBC News

Researchers are probing an unexpected success in a study of an experimental treatment for prostate cancer. In three men with advanced disease, use of an immune drug called ipilimumab, shrank their tumours to such an extent surgeons were able to operate.

The Mayo Clinic team in the US said the "startling" results in the study of 108 men had prompted them to set up a second trial using higher doses. One UK expert said there were currently few treatments for advanced disease. In men with advanced prostate cancer, which has spread outside the prostate, surgery cannot usually be done.

Hormone therapy is usually given to try to shrink the tumour to some degree and buy some time. The trial was set up to see if MDX-010, a type of drug called a monoclonal antibody, would improve on hormone treatment. The idea is that the drug will encourage a strong immune response to attack the cancer cells.

Half the men had normal therapy and half also received MDX-010. In three cases, where the experimental drug was given, the tumours shrank dramatically, enabling surgeons to operate and remove the tumour. There are 20 other patients who are showing improvements and who are being monitored by the surgeons.

'Preliminary'

Dr Eugene Kwon, a surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, said the results in those men were well beyond their expectations. "Our surgeons had never seen this happen before and we were really taken by surprise." They are now planning a trial in 30 men to test higher doses of the drug and hope to start much larger trials across many hospitals shortly after.
Dr Michael Blute, study leader and the surgeon involved said: "I had never seen anything like this before. I had a hard time finding the cancer. "At one point the pathologist (who was working during surgery) asked if we were sending him samples from the same patient."
Until large scale studies are carried out it is unclear whether this response can be repeated in other patients or is an anomaly.

But John Neate, chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity said they would wait for further results with anticipation. "If a cancerous tumour has spread beyond the prostate gland, it would currently be regarded as inoperable and alternative types of treatment, typically hormone therapy are necessary. "If these early and small scale results are replicated in larger trials, this represents a potentially very exciting development.

"We urgently need a wider range of treatment options for prostate cancer which has spread outside the prostate gland. "It must be remembered that this is a small trial however, and the findings are preliminary."

New way to monitor foetal heartbeat

The Times Of India : New painless way to monitor foetal heartbeat

A new system developed by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scientist and colleagues could allow much earlier and painless monitoring of the foetal heartbeat.

Minute fluctuations in a foetal heartbeat can be detected only during labour, which is usually too late to prevent serious or even fatal complications. The new system could also cut down the rate of caesarean deliveries by helping clinicians rule out potential problems that might otherwise prompt the procedure.

"Our objective is to make a monitoring system that's simultaneously cheaper and more effective" than what is currently available, said Gari Clifford, principal research scientist at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

Clifford expects that the system could be commercially available in two to three years pending FDA approval. While only a minority of pregnancies suffer from fluctuations in the foetal heartbeat, those that do can result in negative outcomes.

These problems include certain infections and a loss of oxygen to the baby if it is strangled by its own umbilical cord. Ultrasound can detect the heartbeat quite early in a pregnancy, but it is not sensitive enough to catch variations in the rhythm that could indicate problems.

Electrocardiography (ECG), which records cardiac electrical activity, can indeed catch subtle changes in foetal heartbeat. But the problem is that until now there has been no way to reliably use the technique, except by attaching an electrode to the baby's scalp during labour. Doctors can monitor the foetal ECG signal non-invasively through electrodes on the mother's abdomen, but it is weak compared to the maternal heartbeat and surrounding noise.

Clifford notes that "one of the nice things about monitoring the foetal ECG through the mother's abdomen is you're getting a multidimensional view of the foetal heart, because its electrical activity is recorded from many different angles."

The single probe now used to monitor the heartbeat during labour gives data from only one direction. "So with our system it's like going from a one-dimensional slice of an image to a hologram," Clifford said, according to an MIT release.

Black money whitening facility likely to continue

The New Age : Tax holiday, black money whitening facility likely to continue

The cabinet in its scheduled meeting today is likely to give green light to continuation of tax holiday and the facility to whiten black money despite abuses of the schemes in the past which caused huge revenue losses to the government.Officials of the finance ministry said settlement of the issues was important as they would be incorporated in the forthcoming budget.

In the past, the finance ministry took the decision on its own but this time it has sent the proposals to the cabinet to avoid ‘controversies’.Besides, the ministry has also sought a cabinet decision on the ‘controversial’ pre-shipment inspection system and pay hike for public servants.

An official of the National Board of Revenue told New Age that the government had little scope to discontinue the tax holiday facility, under which industrial units of local and foreign entrepreneurs enjoy income tax and duty exemption for a certain period of time. The government can only decide not to bring any new sector under the tax holiday facility, he said.

At present 18 industrial sectors such as textile, jute goods, pharmaceuticals, melamine, plastic products, ceramics, sanitary ware, fertilisers, sea or river ports, container terminals, internal container depots, gas pipelines and flyovers are entitled to enjoy tax holiday until 2011.Some 352 newly set up industrial units have received tax holiday facility in the last four fiscal years causing a revenue loss of nearly Tk 500 crore to the NBR.

A recent NBR survey revealed that 90 per cent industrial units which enjoyed tax holiday since mid-1990s, abused it as they showed ‘no profit’ after expiry of the facility.Another survey conducted by NBR in 2005 found that 902 companies had enjoyed tax holiday between 2000 and 2004 which led to revenue losses of Tk 847 crore to the government.Successive governments tried to suspend the facility, but failed to so because of pressure and lobbying from the industrialists.

Former finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam said there was no justification for continuing tax holiday as it was widely used as a tool to evade taxes.Finance minister AMA Muhith termed the tax holiday as a big hurdle to expanding the country’s income tax base. ‘There should not be cent percent tax waiver,’ he said.

Opposing the finance minister’s view, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance, AHM Mostafa Kamal, said businessmen still needed the facility to continue the process of industrialization.Annisul Haq, president of the country’s apex trade body FBCCI, said the government should take stringent measures to curb the abuses of the incentive. Suspension of the facility is not an answer, he said.

Businessmen are also pressing for continuation of the facility for whitening black money.Today’s cabinet meeting will select the sectors like toys, shoes, pharmaceutical, cement and real estate in which investment of black money is likely to be allowed in the next fiscal year.

The government provided black money whitening facility several times for a total period of 11 years over the last 36 years. Some Tk 8,908 crore in black money was injected into the formal economy during the period.
